For others, eco-expert Danny Seo recommends using common sense: "If it's bright pink with plastic exfoliating beads and smells like a cocktail, then it's likely loaded with artificial dyes and fragrances," he says.

Choosing items that bear the USDA-certified organic seal is the best way to know you're buying something eco-friendly, but the USDA doesn't distinguish between food ingredients and beauty ingredients—so products that contain inedible items aren't eligible even if they're chemical-free and made from natural ingredients.
